Zacharias Kanuk | Canada
2025 | 100m | Inuktitut
Celebrated Canadian Inuk director Zacharias Kanuk is best known for his film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, the first Canadian dramatic feature film produced entirely in Inuktitut with an all Indigenous cast. Atanarjuat won the Caméra d'Or (Golden Camera) at Cannes, and six Genie Awards, including Best Motion Picture. In 2015, a poll of filmmakers and critics in the Toronto International Film Festival named it the greatest Canadian film of all time.
Zacharias returns in 2025 with his latest offering, a captivating, epic, "folk tale" set 4,000 years ago. A strange death, village upheavals, and swarming suitors lead to a love story gone awry in this enthralling imagining of ancient Inuit stories.
Born from oral traditions, and committed to authenticity, Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) is a unique feat of both cultural conservation and engrossing cinema.
Winner of Best Canadian Feature Film Award, TIFF 2025
